Inverter

A Solar inverter is a type of electrical inverter that is made to change the direct current (DC) electricity from a photovoltaic array into alternating current (AC) for use with home appliances and feed back into the power grid.

Typically, communications capability is included with most inverters so users can monitor the inverter and report on power and operating conditions, provide firmware updates and control the inverter grid connection.

At the heart of the inverter is a real-time microcontroller. Amongst other things, the controller also maximizes the power output from the PV array through complex algorithms called maximum power point tracking (MPPT). The PV maximum output power is dependent on the operating conditions and varies from moment to moment due to temperature, shading, soilage, cloud cover, and time of day so tracking and adjusting for this maximum power point is a continuous process.

SMA Inverters

There are a wide ranges of inverters available covering residential installations upto 4Kw to commercial installations upto 300Kw. One of the most popular inverters is the SMA Sunny Boy range, which are optimally suitable for use in small and mid-range PV systems. SMA Grid-Connect inverters are designed to be used with one series string of between 6 to 24 photovoltaic modules depending upon inverter type. Units can be linked in parallel allowing extreme system design flexibility with the possibility of low cost system expansion and maximum system efficiency.

SMA inverters automatically shut down in the event of: High/Low grid AC-voltage; High/Low grid frequency; Grid failure; or Inverter Malfunction. In PV applications the inverters automatically adjust PV array loading to provide maximum efficiency of solar panels by means of a maximal power point tracker (MPPT).

Standards

All inverters supplied by Maidston Energy comply with standards set for grid-tied operation, safety and electromagnetic compatibility including: G83/1, VDE, AS4777 Certified, IEC 61683, IEC 61727, EN50081, EN50082, EN61000, CE certification.
